Purpose

The reason for this blog

Many times this summer as I've traveled down the path of my Achilles journey, I've taken to the internet to find firsthand accounts...

Day 78: Disappointing Discovery

I went to take out what I thought was my last wedge and found I actually had TWO still in there! Two. More. Weeks. in the boot. So DEPRESSING!

See this is how many wedges I started with.... 4! Not 3... (not sure how I lost count).

So now I've removed 3 wedges. But I'm still not to flat.

This is what I'm down to as of today. Still. one. more. left. 😭

I spent the rest of the day in a funk. I had SO been counting on getting rid of this boot!

Day 72: Looking GREAT!

Saw Dr. Fischer. He said I was at or AHEAD of where I should be right now! So I'm doing great!

He gave me permission to swim as soon as the rest of my scab is gone and sent me on my way with my next checkup in EIGHT weeks! Yippee!

Day 71: Thankful for my helpers

On day 71, I took the time and used social media to THANK my wonderful helpers. 71 days of waiting on me hand and foot... caring for me with love and patience even when they were SICK of me!

Here are the posts:

This guy... chauffeur... companion... nurse... he's doing a great job letting me be the patient this summer #caregiver #JohnJoseph #lovethisman #TakinCareOfMomma #RupturedAchilles #summer2017

This boy... all summer he's worked a big, man's job... 40 hours... HARD, sweaty work... every morning before he leaves, he brings me my cup of coffee (since I can't get it myself) and a kiss goodbye... #mybarista #NoahJames #lovethisboy #TakinCareOfMomma #RupturedAchilles #summer2017

Then there's this one.... when I'm NOT hurt he does ALL the laundry and cooks some meals... but this summer he took his game UP a notch... he is our chef doing ALL the cooking and even meal prep too! And he does it ALL with a smile and a GENUINE desire to serve.... #servanttothecore #JeremiahDavid #lovethisboy #TakinCareOfMomma #RupturedAchilles #summer2017

My water boy... and I drink A LOT of water... he gets it just right... ton of ice... bendy straw... #keepinmehydrated #ElijahDaniel #lovethisboy #TakinCareOfMomma #RupturedAchilles #summer2017

Day 64: Wedge 2 hits the road

Time rolled around for the second wedge to be removed. It was about as traumatic as the first wedge. I had to go back to using the crutches to get around for the first few days, and I was in a lot of pain as well. However, after a couple of days, I was back to hobbling around on my boot with no crutches, and I was one step closer to walking!

Day 57: Cripple cardio

Sitting on my rear all of the time was getting really old. I needed to get moving and get my heart pumping a little bit. So I came up with cripple cardio.

*I started out sitting on the top step off my stairway.

*Using a triceps dip, to lower myself from step to step, I crawled down the steps.

*At the bottom of the steps, I did some squats (stood up and then lowered back down onto the second to last step) for 5 repetitions.

*Then using my crutches I did one lap through the kitchen, dining room, and living room back to the stairs.

*Again at the bottom of the stairs, I put my hands on about the 4th step and did 5 push-ups.

*Then I crawled up the stairs on all fours to my starting position.

The first time I did 30 minutes of cripple cardio. That. Was. TOO. Much. I was bone-weary for several days after that. So the next time I backed down to just 10 minutes of cripple cardio and worked my way from there.

Day 56: At the pool

I spent one BLESSED afternoon at the pool. I couldn't go in the water.  I just sat in a pool chair basking in the sun. When I got too hot, the kids would fill their squirt guns with pool water and squirt me.

May sound lame to you,  but for a girl who'd been confined to quarters all summer... well, it was a MUCH better view than the one from my recliner.

Day 51: Lonely 4th of July

I spent the Fourth of July all by myself. In a way it was actually a big step forward. My family had not left me alone very much. But I was super lonely.

Partly because I had overdone it on Saturday at a family picnic, and partly because the day before I had removed my first wedge, I had to really take it easy on the 4th.

So my family went off without me to serve with our church in the parade, and later the kids went to fireworks and a cookout as well. But I got to binge watch A LOT of Hawaii Five-O!

Day 50: First wedge out

I took out the first wedge! It was NO joke!  My foot did NOT like this new position. The boot seemed to rub in totally different places. I had to go back to using crutches initially until my foot could get used to it.

The first wedge.... it took about two days to get used to its removal.
